Is the membership fee per person or per family?
The $200 membership fee is a one-time fee per person.
When will I get my money back?
When the member dies and the funeral arrangements are arranged through Prairie Lily Funeral Co-op, the full $200 membership fee is applied to the funeral costs. If the membership drive fails to attract 1,000 founding members and we cancel the opening of the funeral co-op, your money will be fully refunded. During the membership drive, all the funds are being held in a separate trust account.
Do you pay dividends on my membership?
No, this is not that kind of co-operative. We are a not-for-profit community service co-op. The benefit you receive is that your funeral will be the lowest price possible for the service you want and you have the opportunity to participate in the governance of the co-operative. Members will receive the benefit of a 10% discount on professional fees in recognition of their contribution to funding the organization.
What happens if a member dies before you open for business?
Until we are operating a licensed funeral home with licensed staff, we are unable to actually provide funeral services. However, we are examining ways in which we can provide assistance and advice in the interim. Your executor can apply for a refund of your membership fee. We have a licensed Funeral Director available to answer your questions.
What will the cost be for my funeral?
We will be able to offer the lowest prices in the market by virtue of not operating for profit. Our price list is in the final stages of approval. In recognition of their contribution, members will receive a 10% discount on professional fees, and the first 1,000 Founding Members will receive an additional 5% bonus discount. In the future, when finances allow, it is expected that general prices will be lowered even further.
We don't have one. We will open offices and facilities when the membership target is reached. We are currently looking for suitable facilities. In the interim, the board of directors meets at the Regina Community Clinic.
Why should I join this co-op now?
We believe that funerals do not have to be so expensive that they are considered a major expense for families. We believe that a not-for-profit funeral home is a good addition to the choices available, one that is built on the co-operative tradition of people working together. The co-op needs 1,000 Founding Members right now to move the project forward.
I've already made arrangements with another funeral home, doesn't that lock me in with them?
No, you are not locked in. By legislation, you have the right to transfer your arrangements and the money you've paid. The "fine print" on your contract should explain that.
By becoming a Prairie Lily member you can provide yourself and your family the opportunity to build the Co-operative and take advantage of co-op prices in the future whether or not you have pre-arranged elsewhere.
